An appreciation of THE THIN BLUE LINE, copied from my Twitter account.
An engrossing doc about the fallibility of justice, memory and the senses. Stylish, knotty, great score. I can see how some people can frown upon Morris’ use of re-enaction and repetition and motif, but it’s actually a very cunning strategy. In and of themselves, they seem kind of hokey at first, like a ham-fisted 80s approximation of film noir, but as the film goes on, they go on to gain this kind of dream-like hypnotic quality, and eventually, they reach a kind of odd synergy with the score. The repeating scenes slowly but surely suck you into the story. It’s a perfect storm of hypnotic elements that formally spruce this doc up.
