So Jacob did this thing earlier by which you start your iTunes or WMP or Winamp on random and write about the first song that comes up. So I’m gonna take the plunge and write about… XTC’s “Helicopter.”
This is a great little song. This is off of Drums and Wires, which came out in 1979, while XTC were a lot more influenced by post-punk than the pastoral. There are sharp, buzzing guitars a-aplenty here, and a solid, sing-songy chorus. In addition, there’s a nifty bit of production towards the end where the song “flies away” as if it was the titular helicopter.
Personally, I think XTC peaked in the 1980s (what a decade: Black Sea! English Settlement! Skylarking!), but Drums and Wires is a awesome album in its own right, too. And yeah, this is a great tune full of nervous energy and sharp guitar work. Thumbs up.
